Coherence

If coherence is not simply calmness, what is it?

Calmness

describes a state.

Coherence

describes organization.

Not opposites · not a claim that calmness is irrelevant

Multiple states, present at the same time. None visually dominating the others.

Coherence

Coherence is the capacity for differentiated information and states to remain in relationship without one state automatically commandeering the organization of the whole system.

Fear can be present.Uncertainty can be present. Contradiction can be present.Activation can be present. Strong desire can be present.

The Whole System

Coherence does not require difficult states to disappear.

Calm + fused

A system can appear calm while operating from a rigid, fused interpretation.

Activated + differentiated

A system can be strongly activated while multiple sources of information remain distinguishable.

Visible activation alone does not tell us how the system is organized.

Coherence concerns the relationship among information and states within the larger organization.
